“Nothing But 'Net's” author, Michael Campbell, should be a familiar name to most Sell It! readers as he was featured in a recent interview in our “My Store” series. In the interview, Michael explained how he had grown the annual sales of a new Internet business – Cellwest – to $750,000 using only online marketing techniques.
Not surprisingly, Michael's interview turned out to be one of the most popular articles we have ever published as it contained some great tips and hints that most Web store owners could make use of.
However, those of you looking for more information as to how he achieved his phenomenal results will be interested to know that Michael has published full details in a new book entitled "Nothing But ' Net: How I Generated $750,000 in Internet Revenues with Virtually No Advertising Costs".
“Oh no, not another Internet marketing book!” I hear you groan. Well, whilst I agree that there is no shortage of Internet marketing books and training courses already available, Michael's book differs from most in two very important aspects.
First, many Internet marketing books currently available are long on theory and short on practical advice. And all too often they are based on an author's limited Internet selling experiences, or even worse, they contain little more than regurgitated marketing theory. However, “Nothing But 'Net” is based on Michael's extensive Internet marketing experience and is packed with detail that explains exactly the steps he took to achieve his results with Cellwest.
The second differentiating factor for “Nothing But 'Net” is that the Cellwest Web store contains hundreds of items, all for sale direct to consumers. If you scratch beneath the surface of other Internet marketing courses you will often find that the author's experiences are in a single-product and/or business-to-business environment.
OK, now for the book itself. It contains 12 chapters that can be divided in to roughly two categories: the techniques that Michael used to drive targeted traffic to the Cellwest Web site, and the methods he used to convert them in to purchasers when they got there.
One of the main traffic-building techniques that Michael used with Cellwest was, not surprisingly, search engine optimisation, and three chapters of the book are dedicated to this. All aspects are covered, including how to choose keywords and domain names, how to design Web pages that will rank highly in the search engines, and strategies for using search engines to your best advantage.
As throughout the book, Michael doesn't just quote theory and give non-specific advice: instead, he explains in great detail exactly what tools and methods he used with Cellwest. As a result “Nothing But 'Net” contains genuinely original and fresh advice.
Take, for example, the topic of keyword selection. Most Internet marketing books explain the importance of choosing good keywords, but very few take the time – as Michael has - to show you exactly how to choose the best keywords for your product or service and then how to use these keywords to drive traffic to your site.
Another example is with the use of doorway or hook pages. Like many other Internet marketers, Michael recommends the use of these pages to build traffic, but only in certain circumstances. He carefully explains what these circumstances are before showing how to go about building effective doorway pages.
Whilst Michael does give emphasis to the use of search engines, he also covers in depth the other tools he used with Cellwest. Separate chapters are devoted to linking strategies and banner advertising, newsgroup advertising and e-mail marketing.
Somewhat hidden in the midst of all this quality marketing advice are two chapters particularly close to my heart.
The first one deals with collecting and analysing data from your Web site. As I have written many times before, access to detailed statistics is vital to the success of any Web store. Michael explains why statistics are so important and, of course, shows how to collect the most useful information, how to analyse it and what actions to take based on this analysis.
And another excellent chapter entitled “Creating successful online shopping conditions” details the steps that Michael took on the Cellwest Web site in order to increase the conversion rate of browsers in to purchasers.
The book ends with two useful chapters that contain links to other Internet marketing resources as well as details of where you can obtain the same tools that Michael used with the Cellwest Web site.
The book is available in two versions, an electronic version at $38 and a paper version at $68 (plus shipping and handling). Both versions carry a full 90-day “love it or shove it” money-back guarantee.
Purchasing either version also provides a year's access to Michael's online marketing resource, the Vault of Internet Marketing Secrets.
If you would to see some of the content before buying, free book extracts are available.
Verdict: Nothing But ' Net” contains fresh, detailed advice based on the author's proven marketing techniques in a volume, business-to-consumer Web store. As a result, you will learn from this book no matter how experienced an Internet marketer you already are. Highly recommended.
