Product Make Your Site Sell!

A couple of weeks ago I did something in my weekly newsletter that I have never done before -- I wholeheartedly and unreservedly recommended a new product to my readers. So what is this product and just why is it so good?

The product is called Make Your Site Sell! (or MYSS! for short) and it is designed to do just that -- help people sell effectively online. Now if there's one thing that there is no shortage of on the 'Net is books and training courses by self-acclaimed Internet marketing experts. However there are four key factors that make MYSS! stand out from the crowd:

  • It covers a much larger subject area that its competitors: how to select products suitable for selling online, how to design a Web site to sell them effectively, and how to drive targeted traffic to the Web site.

  • The volume of information and the level of detail it contains is quite extraordinary -- over 800 pages all in.

  • It has been written by someone who has extensive experience of selling online.

  • It is being sold for an absurdly low price -- less than 10% of the price of some of its competitors!

MYSS! is currently only available in electronic format with versions available for Windows 3.1, Windows 95/98 and the Mac. A hard copy is planned for later. Purchasers need to download a single executable file that is about 7000 Kb in size -- this will take about 25-30 minutes on a 28.8K modem. Executing the downloaded file installs a MYSS! folder on the desktop which contains six files in Adobe PDF format. In addition to the main MYSS! book there are two bonus reports (covering Internet product development and traffic building) as well as an extensive index and glossary.

One of the problems I have found in the past with PDF based books is that it can be very difficult to navigate through them. With over 800 pages you might expect this to be a problem with MYSS! However this is not the case, as the extensive use of hyper links within and between all six files makes navigation straightforward.

The heart of the product is the MYSS! file itself which is almost 500 pages long and has a single goal -- to help you put together a Web site that will sell successfully. After the opening welcome and introduction chapters the author introduces the concept of MWR (Most Wanted Response) and explains why this is so important if you want to build a Web site that sells. The concept is not difficult to grasp -- it essentially involves figuring out what is you want your customers to do when they arrive at your Web site. And only when you fully understand this should you begin to design your site.

The next chapters give detailed advice on how to set-up and design your Web site. Topics covered include how to write effective copy, how to increase the usability of your site, and how to design a good navigation system. What this book does not attempt to be is an HTML primer -- there are plenty of books already available that cover this topic adequately.

The remainder of the book is devoted to tips and hints on increasing sales at your site, liberally illustrated with examples of sites that sell effectively.

It is very difficult to get across in these few paragraphs the broad scope and in-depth detail contained within this work. Fortunately though you can download the full table of contents from the MYSS! Web site.

There are two free bonus reports include with MYSS!. I'm usually very sceptical of so-called bonus reports as these are often of very poor value and are simply thrown in to try and increase the perceived value of an over-priced product. However in this case the two bonus reports include with MYSS! are truly excellent.

The first one is titled "It All Starts With The Product" and explains how to go about selecting a suitable product for selling on the Internet, how to price it properly and how to test it. Although this report is only 35 pages long it is packed with excellent advice that will be of value to anyone thinking of selling on the Web.

The second bonus report is "Traffic-Building" and is nearly 200 pages long. It starts by eliminating traffic building techniques that the author regards as "time wasters" before moving on to describe in some detail techniques such as affiliate programs and ezine advertising. The biggest piece of this report is given over to search engines, which the author regards as being the "bargain of the millennium". This section explains in great detail everything you need to know to be successful with the search engines.

There are very few aspects of the MYSS! package I would choose to criticise. The only point I would make is that it is by and large a marketing book. And although coverage is given to topics such as choosing a shopping cart, accepting orders and fulfilling orders, none of these is in any great depth. That said, there are plenty of links provided to other resources that do cover these areas in detail.

If you are looking for more information, there are free downloads available from the site which include the full table of contents and two sample chapters.

Verdict: MYSS! will prove an invaluable resource for anyone who is trying to sell on the Web. It provides an incredible amount of information at a very low price and is highly recommended.
