Nice post. I found the portion on high involvement vs. low involvement quite helpful as well as your advice about where to place cross-selling offers on your website. All the info you provided will most definitely help in my research process. Thanks.

Wow. What a great article. It's interesting. A lot of our experience comes in the brick and mortar stores and we're looking to develop "the silver bullet" between real life stores and virtual. How can one effectively and instantly cross-sell and up-sell across channels?

One advantage and disadvantage of the online store is the immediacy of it. With some algorithms you can instantly cross-sell. This is a huge advantage but you do raise the excellent point of bombarding the customer. Conversely in a brick and mortar setting you can be a little more subtle about it buy placement on the store floor and giving the buyer the action to make an impulse purchase.

Great article.

The thank you page, aka order confirmation page also is fertile ground for the right kind of upsell, whether it is an additional item to qualify for the free shipping or an affiliate offer. Affiliate upsells which are category-consistent with your store and which offer an incentive for your customer to return and shop with you again perform best.

Very nice blog on up-selling and cross-selling. Emcien offers analytics the detects what products are bought together. To your point “f you have a large number of products, try to use a shopping cart platform that can automate recommendations for you based on past purchase data."

Emcien automates the recommendations based on sales transation data. This is very valuable as the buying patterns and trends are changing, and so are the products. It is impossible to make humans manage this data on a dynamic basis. The upsell opportunity can drive up to +30% sales gain.
