Total Internet commerce revenues in Western Europe will grow from $1 billion in 1997 to $30 billion in 2001 according to a new research study published by International Data Corporation (IDC). This report, based on IDC’s Internet Commerce Market Model reveals the average transaction size per buyer per year will grow dramatically, especially for the business-to-business segment, driving total Internet commerce revenues to astonishing levels.
IDC projects the number of devices accessing the Web in Western Europe will grow from 14.2 million in 1997 to almost 58 million by the end of 2001.The number of users associated with those devices will grow from 16.6 million in 1997 to 56 million by year end 2001.
“Germany and the United Kingdom are currently rivals for the spot as the largest Internet market in Western Europe, each with a 1997 Web population of more than four million individuals,” said Carsten Hejndorf, project manager of IDC’s European Internet program. “Germany alone is expected to drive one-third of the World Wide Web user growth in Western Europe and dominate the market between 1998 and 2001 with more than 17 million Web users projected by the end of 2001″.
Almost 4.3 percent of all inhabitants in Western Europe are now World Wide Web users, with penetration rates by country varying from 0.8 percent to 12.2 percent. The Nordic countries take the clear lead but Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Netherlands, and Germany are also all above the Western European average.
The report provides a sizing and forecast of the market for Internet commerce in Western Europe, including the number of users accessing the Internet and World Wide Web, the number of devices accessing the Internet and World Wide Web, and the level of transactions per user. Market sizing and forecasts are segmented by country and end-user segment. Sixteen Western European countries are covered, split by five end-user segments (home, small business, medium/large business, government, and education). Data are provided for 1995, 1996, and 1997 with forecasts to 2001.
